You can learn life-saving skills by taking a class at your local Chapter of the American Red Cross. Our instructors are skilled in passing on to you their knowledge in an easy-to-follow manner and in a pleasant environment.
We offer classes in English and can offer classes in Spanish upon request. We can also offer ‘one-on-one’ challenges in CPR by appointment to individuals who were trained after April 2006. We offer workplace training, as well. View our community schedule or call (919) 942-4862 ext. 223 to schedule a workplace session.· In the past year, 220,000 Americans died of sudden cardiac arrest: almost one every two minutes.
· Death from sudden cardiac arrest is not inevitable. If more people knew CPR, more lives could be saved.
· A child has a much smaller amount of reserve oxygen in his or her body, so it is very important to give rescue breathing as soon as possible.
· Each year, many children and infants die because they swallowed something that lodged in their airway. Many of these children could have been saved had someone known how to help.
HANDS ONLY CPR NOW AVAILABLE!
As of April 1, 2008, Hands Only CPR, which is rapid, deep compressions on an ADULT VICTIM'S CHEST, is now a valid technique for bystanders to use at the scene of an accident. The Orange County Chapter of the American Red Cross is offering Hands Only CPR training kits for $10.00, which includes a DVD for self-training purposes. You can obtain this kit by calling our office at (919) 942-4862 ext. 223. Please know that in no way does this certify you in Adult CPR. This is only a training device to give you life-saving skills if you witness the accident of an ADULT VICTIM, NOT the accident of a child or infant. If you are required by your job or wish to be certified in Adult CPR, you must take an Adult CPR course through the American Red Cross. You can take a class with the Orange County Chapter by viewing our community calendar and calling (919) 942-4862 ext. 223 to schedule a time or workplace session. Additionally, the Orange County Chapter will be adding Hands Only CPR to all its Adult CPR/AED classes at no additional charge.
Caring for others is an innate skill, but we can professionalize your good intentions.
Babysitting courses are designed for preteens and teens. Participants learn Child and Infant CPR and skills such as feeding, bathing, professional responsibility. This course is taught over two days at the Orange County Chapter, usually during the summer. We do not have a steady offering of these classes, but we oversee all Red Cross courses taught in the county, and therefore know when classes are scheduled.
The Caregiving modules are new to our chapter. They consist of 9 important topics:
1. Home Safety
2. General Caregiving Skills
3. Positioning and Helping Your Loved One Move
4. Assisting with Personal Care
5. Healthy Eating
6. Caring for the Caregiver
7. Legal and Financial Issues
8. Caring for a Loved One with Alzheimer’s Disease or Dementia
9. Caring for a Loved One with HIV/AIDS
These modules are not regularly scheduled, so materials and training sessions are available upon request only.

In 2005, 21 children drowned in North Carolina. Although this is an improvement from previous years, we must increase awareness about water safety. Also keep in mind that drowning victims do not have an age or skill limit. They can be old or young, novice or expert swimmers.
Lifeguarding and swim education are important to the Red Cross. Related classes are taught throughout Orange County, all overseen by the Orange County Chapter. Community Authorized Providers for Lifeguarding and Learn to Swim Classes include:

Decades after the identification of HIV/AIDS, it is still stigmatized and there is no cure. We must learn how to protect the ones we care about by learning the facts. The Orange County Chapter and surrounding chapters offer HIV/Prevention Educaton courses free of charge.
