About Us
The Orange County Chapter of the American Cross has been a part of the community since it’s formation in 1989, through the union of the Chapel Hill/Carrboro Chapters, both of which were chartered in 1917.
The American Red Cross is defined by its mission: “The American Red Cross, a humanitarian organization led by volunteers and guided by its Congressional Charter and the Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross Movement, will provide relief to victims of disasters and help people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies.” In keeping with this mission, your local chapter has been instrumental in providing emergency relief for both local and national disasters. In addition to responding to disasters, teaching disaster preparedness is a core function of the American Red Cross.
Throughout the year the Orange County NC chapter trains individuals to respond to disaster events and provide disaster assistance; provides communication to military personnel in times of urgent need; teaches health & safety, babysitting, and water safety courses; and hosts blood drives to help ensure the region’s blood banks are adequately supplied.
The essence of the Orange County NC American Red Cross is to work in the community, teaching preparedness and providing disaster relief. For more than 90 years, your local Red Cross chapter has worked in partnership with local residents, businesses and organizations to fulfill its obligation of preparedness and response.
Neither the national chapter of the American Red Cross nor any local chapter receives government funding. A portion of our local operating budget is met with United Way dollars. The majority of our operating revenue is from individual and corporate donations.
We are very grateful for the partnership we have with the Orange County community and we look forward to continuing our work with you. Although we are in the midst of changing times, the need to be prepared and to respond to human needs does not change.
